about

Can You See Me? (Hands in the Air) is the new, hard-hitting single by Lady A aka Alicia Saldenha.

(Official Music Video: youtu.be/NC6kz51TD9w)

The song is an indictment of the police brutality constantly claiming the lives of black and brown people in the United States and around the world. The subtitle, Hands in the Air, references the online protest movement born after the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown, an 18 year-old African American, killed while unarmed and with his hands raised.

Alicia Saldenha, born in the Caribbean twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is well-known as a jazz, soul and funk singer in Japan, with two albums, Rose (with indigo jam unit) and Dance with the Sun (her solo project) under her belt. She is also the producer and presenter of the music podcast, VibeOlogy, on Blackan Radio, Japan.

Can You See Me? (Hands in the Air) launches the Lady A Project, featuring Saldenha's edgier side, original rap, electronic music and Caribbean dance music, which she calls TDM or Tropical Electronic Dance Music.

Can You See Me? (Hands in the Air) is a protest song as well as a call for solidarity across borders in fighting racism, institutionalized discrimination and hatred.

lyrics

Can You See Me? (Hands in the Air) by Lady A
aka Alicia Saldenha
Lyrics

Can you see me standing here
Standing here with my hands in the air
Don't shoot
I'm standing here with my hands in the air
And my life in your hands

Can you see me standing here
Standing here with my hands in the air
Don't shoot
I'm standing here with my hands in the air
And my life in your hands

Can you see me?
Can you see me?
Hey!
Can you see me?

Hands in the air
But not from fear and
Not surrender no my dear

Can you see the strength in me
Can you see the strength in we
These are fists of solidarity
As we March for our humanity
For our humanity
For our humanity

Men in blue
Men in white too
Hunting down my people in a cycle so cruel
The more things change the more it's just the same
NYPD
KKK
Tell me how you're not the same

Yes my people come together
Every race every creed
With our hands in the air in solidarity
Come on

Yes my people come together
Every race every creed
With our hands in the air
That's strength indeed
Come on
